Is Embalming Required?

No. However, it can be necessary in some cases, such as for a funeral with viewing.

It is also sometimes the funeral home’s prerogative to require embalming if funeral plans are delayed, or if there is a long wait for family members to arrive in town. Embalming is also sometimes required when the body is being transported from one state to another.

Most of the whole embalming debate really depends on the type of service you wish to have.

What Options Do I Have in Funerals?

The options available at death are numerous and range from donation to medical science to cremation to a formal funeral with burial.       

Which option you choose will depend on such factors as your religious affiliation, ethnic   culture, budget available and --- above all else --- the stated desires of the deceased.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and check into alternatives when planning a service.

The cost of a funeral is not a simple equation.  Many people relate it to a wedding because there are many pieces that are involved in the final cost.  As a general rule of thumb an average funeral, including casket cars and some accommodations, may vary between $6500 and $8500 depending on what sort of service you want and the merchandise selected.

Cremation may be a less expensive alternative but that is usually done to providing less services.  With cremation you have the option of a service with visitation.  For a better understanding you really need to discuss your specific needs at a funeral home.

 

Is A Burial Vault Required?

There is no law that requires the use of a vault or concrete grave liner. It is a requirement of most cemeteries to hold the integrity of the grave after a burial.

The minimum requirement of most cemeteries is a concrete grave liner. To provide more protection sealing vaults may be purchased.  It is important to have more then one choice of vault. It is always easier to make a decision when you know the different options that are available. The critical issue is that you are the
decision maker.

There is no law that requires the use of a casket.  There may be a need for some sort of container when a body is being shipped across state lines or for a burial with a visitation.

 Depending on your service choice you may have options such as renting or other alternative containers.  Check with your local funeral director to see what options he can provide you.
